New owner to renovate Crowne Plaza as upscale Tapestry by Hilton

Feb. 8, 2017 - The Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Hampton will soon be renovated and reflagged as an upscale Tapestry Collection by Hilton under new owner Shamin Hotels, a leader in the hospitality industry. Shamin Hotels has 50 hotels in four states, including the Hampton Inn in Coliseum Central.

“Adding the Hilton name to Hampton’s downtown hotel will bring additional business and leisure travelers to the city,” said Mayor Donnie Tuck. “The beautiful waterfront destination is a perfect fit for a new type of unique, independent hotel that offers distinctive experiences.”

The Crowne Plaza is one of the first properties approved in the new Tapestry Collection by Hilton brand, the company’s 14th brand overall and second collection brand. “We are thrilled to be working with Shamin Hotels on this property,” said Matt Wehling, Hilton senior vice president for development. “Our teams have collaborated on many outstanding projects across our brand portfolio … striving to provide our guests with the most unique and memorable experiences.”

The Tapestry Collection, comprised of one-of-a kind, upscale and independent hotels, is the ideal brand for this hotel, which has dramatic river views, a brewery on-site and is at the center of the revitalization of downtown Hampton.”

With 38 years in the hospitality industry, Shamin Hotels owns and operates more than 6,500 rooms in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Florida and 100,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space.

“We are excited to have a second Shamin Hotels property to accommodate guests visiting Hampton, whether they’re at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, on business travel, participating in local athletic events, or in town for a leisure getaway,” said Mary Fugere, director of Hampton’s Convention & Visitor’s Bureau. “Shamin Hotel’s second investment is a sign of confidence and support in Hampton's tourism growth.”

In addition to the Hampton location, Hilton said six other hotels - two in Indianapolis, and one each in Syracuse, Chicago, Nashville and New Jersey, have signed letters of intent with the Tapestry Collection. Another 35 deals are in the works.
