Downtown Hampton on Queens Way between King and Wine Street. Held in conjunction with the International Children’s Festival.Overview of EventJoin in commemorating the Native American, European and African cultures, individually, as well as how they have come together to shape our community at Hampton Heritage Day. The event provides focus on the history that shaped who we are today as well as provides an opportunity to explore the legacy of what happened to each civilization throughout our 400-year cultural engagement here along the Chesapeake Bay.Type of EventThis festival is a free educational opportunity at which we focus on providing opportunities to teach about each culture as well as explore the opportunity to heal through engagement and knowledge.
Activities Taking Place at the EventThe event includes traditional music, dance, storytelling and other performances and presentations that take place throughout the day as well as hands-on family activities, cultural displays, demonstrations, food, traditional arts & crafts, and more to honor those who came before us and their legacy in our lives today.Goal of EventOur goal with the Hampton Heritage Day is to broaden the story and provide a deeper context of the early formation of Hampton: to honor the Native American people who were already here long before the settlers arrived, as well as the Africans who arrived soon after in 1619, and who, in a very real sense built the city. The confluence of these groups is a key moment in our history and the nation’s past and needs to be a part of our conversation today.Hampton History MuseumThe Hampton History Museum serves to increase the awareness and understanding of the history of Hampton by maintaining an educational and research center for the collection, exhibition, interpretation, preservation and promotion of the vast historic resources of the City.
