What If I Don't Agree With My Assessed Value?

By contacting the City Assessor's Office you can set up an appointment to have your property inspected and reviewed for accuracy. If adjustments are necessary, they will be addressed immediately. Accurate data collection is essential to estimating values.

If, after contacting the City Assessor, you are not satisfied with the value placed on your property, you may apply to the Real Estate Review Board to appeal an assessment. Appeal forms may be obtained by contacting the Assessor's Office. The Board is made up of Hampton citizens appointed by City Council.

If you are still not satisfied with the decision of the Review Board, you can file a petition with the Circuit Court seeking relief.

Why Are Property Assessments Important?
Property taxes are necessary to equitably distribute the tax burden among all property owners based upon the market value of their property. Properties are appraised so that some of the costs associated with providing services, such as public education, fire and police protection, roads and utilities, can be allocated to property owners in proportion to the market value of their individual properties.

City Assessor Responsibilities

The Assessor is responsible for the annual reassessment of all real estate in the City of each year. Hampton assesses on a fiscal year basis which runs from July 1st to June 30th of each year and as is required by Virginia law, Hampton assesses at 100% of fair market value in a uniform and equitable manner.

  • Interpret and administer all laws pertaining to real estate assessments
  • Create and update the Land Book (Tax Roll), and publish the current information by September 1 of each year
  • Maintain accurate, current property information (to include description of land and improvement information on all real estate parcels)
