Julian Padowicz was a 7 year old living in Warsaw when WW II began. He and his mother trekked into southern Poland, where they endured Soviet occupation before escaping over the snow-covered Carpathian Mountains into neutral Hungary. These experiences, as well as subsequent ones on their way to safety in the United States, have been recounted in his three-part memoir.
Arriving in America in 1941, at the age of nine, Julian discovered that his war-time experiences had ill-prepared him for claiming his share of “the American Dream,” so a third sequel, “When the Diamonds Were Gone,” (2015) is a coming-of-age story. He will sign copies of this most recent work at the talk.
April 19, 2017, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Hampton History Museum
The mid-twentieth century was a great era for the popular song. The golden age of movie musicals brought us classics like “Over the Rainbow” and “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” At the same time, the sophisticated jazzy tunes of Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and many more captivated listeners. Little Doors wanders through this seemingly endless canon of great songs, gathering tunes like shells on the beach and taking them home to enjoy again and again. Simply presented with vocals, guitar and upright bass, these songs take the listener to a place in their past: a place of nostalgia evoking forgotten joys or heartaches, sometimes with a fresh appreciation that comes from having been away from an old friend for too long.
Beer and wine will be available for purchase from La Bodega Hampton

The symbolism of the Phoenix, like the mystical bird itself, dies and is reborn across cultures and throughout time. Choreographer, David F. Riddick, imagines a more modern take on this ancient mythology. Phoenix is a story of a young boy who faces many trails in his life. Throughout his growing process the boy realizes how pain helps him become an anchor for others who grieve in silence. Therefore, like the mythical Phoenix, the boy bestows on each of them a crown of beauty as they rise from the ashes of their personal struggles.
