    Celebrate the 29th annual Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival at the Hampton Roads Convention Center Feb. 22-25. The Merchants Mall will feature everything for quilt, fiber, wearable & textile artists and home sewers. In addition, M-AQF will present the finest collection of quilt, garment and fiber art exhibitions, including quilt and wearable art prize money competitions. Rounding out the event will be workshops and lectures presented by leading instructors along with demonstrations throughout the Merchants Mall. Complete information on all quilt festivals presented by Mancuso Show Management is available at www.quiltfest.com. Hampton Roads Convention Center. 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday; 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday. $15 includes readmission, $13 Sunday only; ages 16 and under free.

    Cécile McLorin Salvant graces The American Theatre with her silky jazz sound that earned her a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, "For One To Love." Salvant’s natural curiosity for the history of American music and the connections between jazz, vaudeville, blues, and folk music, informs her unique performance style, which often includes rarely recorded, forgotten songs with strong stories. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Cécile McLorin Salvant moved to Aix-en-Provence, France, to study classical and baroque music, and it was here that she developed a love for jazz. Since winning the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington D.C., she has toured clubs, concert halls and festivals and is sure to deliver a stylish and captivating evening of music. This is a not-to-be-missed event on the American Theatre stage.

    Celebrating the 100th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald -- a native of Newport News, an award-winning jazz artist, and a Virginia native --Desirée Roots brings to life Ella’s most noted songs. Accompanied by some of Virginia’s most acclaimed jazz musicians, this evening of celebration and joy comes to the American Theatre stage for just two performances. Joining Roots on stage will be Scott Wichmann as Frank Sinatra, Billy Dye as Louis Armstrong, and Anthony Cosby as Nat “King” Cole. Born April 25, 1917, Ella Fitzgerald was one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. “The First Lady of Song” delighted audiences around the world for over 60 years, sold over 40 million albums, and received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Join us as we commemorate Ella at 100!

    Join us as we ride our first Sunday Cruise of 2018! Our ride will will be held in the N. King Street area. *Please arrive a bit before 4 p.m. and be ready to roll. Location: Ride will leave from Booker Elementary School. Parking is available on-site. This ride is a casual pace, suitable for most skill levels and for all bike types. No registration is necessary. Per Hampton city code, helmets are required for those 14 years or younger. Recommended for all ages.     Learn more about what it takes to keep Hampton citizens safe by signing up for the Citizen Police Academy. Registration deadline is Feb. 26 . Classes begin on March 12. The 12-week program includes discussions about ethics, laws, community-oriented policing, officer safety techniques and much more. The academy is designed to teach residents about the mission, policies, and day-to-day operations of the Police Division. The larger goal, however, is to improve communication between citizens and police and dispel misconceptions the community may have about the police.
