Higher Education

Hampton Roads has almost 90,000 students currently enrolled in colleges, universities and community colleges. Hampton is home to Hampton University and Thomas Nelson Community College and has over 15,000 students between the two institutions.

Hampton University
Hampton University, a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education, is a privately-endowed, non-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational, historically black university. Hampton has grown into a comprehensive University offering a broad range of technical, liberal arts, pre-professional, professional, and graduate degree programs.

Hampton University, in collaboration with a number of health care providers in Hampton Roads, has begun construction of a Proton Beam Therapy Center, which will be used in the treatment of cancer. The facility is expected to open in 2010 and treat 2,000 patients per year. Currently there are only four other Proton Beam facilities in the country. Other Hampton University projects that involve the research and treatment of cancer include physics professor Dr. Cynthia Keppel's patent on a breast cancer detection device.

Thomas Nelson Community College
Thomas Nelson Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges.
