Richard A. Sweatt is a nationally recognized and dedicated member of the nation’s fire and emergency services. He is a 26-year member and Captain in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, and is a nationally registered ALS provider. He is the Department’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer and has held his position since being appointed in October of 1997. He assisted with the development, and currently teaches, the Department’s EEO and Diversity training program for incumbents, recruit firefighters, and entry level civilians. He is a State of Virginia Fire Training Instructor for their EEO and Diversity Training Program. Captain Sweatt is a former member of the nationally recognized State of Virginia’s EEO/AA Council.
Captain Sweatt is a graduate of Cornell Universities EEO and Complaint Handling Studies Certificate Programs. He is trained in Interviews and Interrogations from the University of Northern Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management. He has completed the National Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution Curriculum for mediator; and is a trained Fairfax County Mediator for the County of Fairfax Government. Recently, he completed the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute’s Fire Department Equal Opportunity Officer I certification course. He is also a graduate of the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute in Dillard University, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Captain Sweatt is a member of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters where he has served as the local President of his department and was appointed as the State of Virginia Representative some years ago. He has been a member of the Women Chief Fire Officers Association (WCFO), Women in the Fire Service, International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Firefighters, other international fire and emergency organizations. He has a history of supporting women’s issues and other disadvantaged employee groups. He was recently appointed by the Women Chief Fire Officers Organization as the Chair of the Coaching and Mentoring Committee. He has presented before local, state, and national fire and emergency conferences. |
