The following is a list of guidelines for consideration of applicants for Volunteer Firefighter and/or EMT positions, during the screening process.

  1. Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age at the time of application.

  2. Must be an approved member of one of Hampton's Volunteer Fire Companies and/ or Rescue Squads. Currently Fox Hill and Buckroe Companies accept Junior Volunteers.

  3. Must be enrolled in high school and maintain no less than a 2.0 grade point average ("C").

  4. Must attend any scheduled interview, examination, appointment, or meeting relative to screening process.

  5. If licensed, must have a satisfactory driving record (with not worse than -2 points) and meet all City of Hampton and Hampton Fire & Rescue criteria. Virginia DMV Transcript will be provided at no charge to applicant; all others are at applicant expense. NOTE: Please review full driving record criteria included in this packet.

  6. Must successfully complete the Firefighter Agility Test. (Firefighter Applicants only)

  7. Must not be convicted of any felony. NOTE: A record of criminal conviction will not necessarily bar you from volunteering. In making our decision, we will consider factors such as the seriousness of the violation, nature of the violation, and age at the time of conviction, circumstances and facts surrounding the conviction, and its degree of relevance to the position for which you have applied. Juvenile Intake check should indicate that applicant's previous work performance or conduct is acceptable.

  8. Must have no substantiated current use of a narcotic, or any illegal drug as defined by Federal and/or State law, or illegal use of a controlled substance. Must not have used, or committed any illegal act involving the use of marijuana or hashish within the last year. Must not have used, or committed any illegal act involving the use of cocaine, crack or speed within the last three (3) years. Must not have used, or committed any illegal act involving narcotic drugs such as heroin, LSD, PCP, etc. And, must not have been convicted or found guilty of any illegal act involving possession, use, or distribution of any illegal drugs within the last five (5) years.

  9. Must not intentionally misrepresent facts or information on any employment application and/or questionnaire used for this process, and/or during any personal interview.

  10. Must not have a "founded" child abuse or neglect complaint.

  11. Must successfully complete physical examination. Medical History Questionnaire, Medical Release, and Job Functions and Physical Demands of a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT forms attached.
