Qualifications
Volunteer
  • Volunteer applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application, must have a satisfactory driving record, must be physically fit, must attend any scheduled interview, examination, appointment, or meeting relative to the screening process.

  • Volunteer applicants must sign an Agreement to participate in the active delivery of fire and rescue services as a volunteer firefighter and/or EMT-B for a minimum of 24 hours each calendar month for a period of period of not less than 2 years from the date of initial certification in the program for which the applicant is enrolled.

  • Volunteer Application Packets for Firefighter or EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) may be picked up from the Recruiter's Office at the Training Bureau, 1300 Thomas Street. Call (757) 727-1223 for an appointment.

  • Completed applications should be returned to the Recruiter/Retention Administrator at the Training Bureau. Once a background check is completed, applicants are notified of their acceptance into the program of their choice. They are provided with a schedule for orientation and training classes. Applicants selected for the Firefighter program are also notified of the date for Agility Testing.
