Litter Awareness Committee

Purpose:

The Litter Awareness Committee was established in 2000 to foster public awareness of the importance of keeping our city clean and free of litter. The Litter Awareness Committee grew from the foundation started by the Coastal Awareness Committee, which was formed in 1990 and dissolved in 2000.

Committee Members:

  • Pat Parker, Chair
  • Shirley Boyd
  • Betsy Castenien
  • Patricia Couser, Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast
  • Angela Kowitz, Syms Middle School
  • Syd Letz, Davis Middle School
  • John Watkins, East Hampton Neighborhood Association
  • Amanda Young, New York Life

Typical Projects:

The Litter Awareness Committee fulfills its charge through a variety of educational and action-oriented projects.

  • The Committee oversees the Commission's Adopt-A-Spot program.
  • Committee Members distributed marine litter bags to boating and fishing retailers in the city last April, under the auspices of the Coastal Awareness Committee.
  • The Committee participated in Clean City Month activities.

In addition to these activities, the Committee promotes citizen involvement in litter awareness issues, develops activities and events to focus public attention on the problem of litter, and provides education about litter to the citizens of Hampton.
