Al’s Pals

This is a nationally recognized evidence-based curriculum that develops social-emotional skills, self-control, problem-solving abilities, and healthy decision-making in children ages 3-8 years old. This program will help preschool aged children become ready to go to school by teaching age appropriate academic and social/emotional concepts while infusing opportunities to practice positive interaction with peers and teachers. This class is taught with the parent class Here, Now, and Down the Road.

Building Better Relationships

This 4-week course is designed for couples that are engaged, married, or in a committed relationship and want to enhance their communication and intimacy. Couples will develop conflict resolution skills, establish priorities, set goals, and examine the values within their relationship.

Building Better Relationships II

This 4 week course is designed for couples that are engaged, married, or in a committed relationship and want to enhance their communication and intimacy. Couples will focus on maintaining humor and unconditional acceptance in the family, identifying personal needs and wants, developing a satisfying relationship, managing finances, and taking time for self. Participation in Part I is not a pre-requisite.

Crianza con Carino es un programa que fue desarrollado por el Dr. Steven Bavolek. La filosaphia de este programa es de forma un estilo de vida familiar mas sano. Este programa concentra en el desarrallo del nino y la habilidad para ayudar a criar ninos; en el mejoramiento de la relacion entre padre y hijo al igual que el enlace, la comunicacion y mejor comprehension; y a la vez reduce expectivas inapropiadas que los padres tengan de sus hijos.

Crianza con carino esta basado en la cultura Hispana, esta dirigido a las necesidades de hispanos, y es facilitada en ingles y espanol.

Crianza con Carino is a program that was developed by Dr. Steven Bavolek. The philosophy of this program is to promote a healthier way of life for families. This program concentrates on child development and the ability to care for children; in improving the relationship between parent and child encompassing communication and better understanding; and at the same time, reducing inappropriate expectations that parents may have for their children.

Crianza con Carino is culturally based, is directed towards Hispanic needs and is facilitated in both English and Spanish.

Dynamic Dads

Being a father is hard work. Being a good father is even harder. But 'Dynamic Dads' can help. The 12 week program, geared to fathers for any child, has a simple message. It's important for fathers to take responsibility for their children. The program provides a supportive environment where dads can get together and discuss parenting challenges and triumphs. Topics include personal development, enhancing communication, decision-making, and other life-skills; responsible fatherhood; assessing relationships; and caring for your child's health. Find out what your child really needs from you as a father and continue to reap a lifetime of rewards!

Early Childhood STEP
(Systematic Training for Effective Parenting)

Parenting young children is a challenge. Just when you know exactly what to do, your child throws you a curve. Early Childhood STEP is designed to help you understand and deal with the changing needs, abilities and behavior of babies, toddlers and preschoolers up through age five. In seven stimulating sessions, STEP teaches parents how to nurture and communicate with their sons and daughters while helping them build a healthy self-concept. Practical, easy-to-apply skills that encourage cooperation and enhance effective discipline are tailored to a child's age.

Elementary STEP
(Systematic Training for Effective Parenting)

When you talk to your child, does it sometimes seem as though no one is listening? Learn how to get through to your son or daughter in Elementary STEP, an excellent program for parents with children ages six through 12. This practical, seven session course provides moms and dads with the training they need to communicate effectively with their children. Children ages eight to 12 will take part in a similar program offered at the same time. (A nursery and child care are provided for children from birth to eight years of age.)

Empowering Couples

This is a six week series built on the Prepare/Enrich program and over 25 years of clinical experience and research with couples. Program goals are: to help couples identify and build on strengths, to teach communication and conflict resolution skills, to help couples identify stumbling blocks and turn them into stepping stones, and to teach strategies for developing healthier relationships.

Here, Now, and Down the Road

This class is a strength-based parent education program that helps parents build positive relationships with their young children and learn practical ways to help their children acquire important life skills for a safe and healthy future. The program will also offer information from the VA Department of Education about how parents can prepare their children for school academically and emotionally.

LAMB (Labor and My Baby)

A baby is a bundle of joy. But there's no denying that expectant parents can be a bundle of nerves at the thought of all the unknowns that lie ahead. This 12 week prenatal program will not only calm your fears and prepare you for the challenges-and delights-of parenthood, but will also provide instruction on prepared child birth through LAMB. Lamb Programs are offered in partnership with SENTARA Careplex and are open to Hampton Residents and all who are delivering at SENTARA Careplex. Childcare for siblings is not provided.

Kids First

This 4-hour workshop provides information that can help parents understand what their children experience when their lives are reorganized by divorce and family conflict.  It will guide parents in making informed decisions about parenting plans as they transform their relationship with husband and wife to co-parents. (satisfies Virginia Legislative requirements for child custody and visitation disputes.)  Fee required to attend and must be pre-registered

Nurturing Program for Parents of Children Ages 1 - 4 Years

We can't promise you the perfect family, but we can help you build a strong foundation that will get yours off to a good start. This family-centered program will teach you how to nurture your children and reinforce positive values. In a total of 21 sessions-divided into two parts-this course explores normal childhood development, appropriate discipline, ways to encourage acceptable behaviors and stress management techniques. The program also demonstrates how to take care of the family members whose needs often are neglected when a new baby enters the household: moms and dads.

Nurturing Program for Parents of Children Ages 5-11 Years

This family centered program will help parents of children five to eleven years of age learn how to create family rules, encourage appropriate behavior, communicate effectively and manage stress. Children will learn about gaining self-control, working with feelings, and problem solving social issues.

Nurturing Program for Teens

Parenting teenagers involves developing a healthy relationship through communication.  This program invites both parents and their teens to share in this weekly, 12-session course.  Parents and adolescents meeting separately and later together to learn how to handle anger, manage stress, communicate and negotiate.

Playgroups

Sometimes it's hard to find the time just to have fun with your child. If you want to enjoy some good old-fashioned play time, sign up for a Healthy Families play group. You'll be led by experienced facilitators in activities that include art, free play, story times and circle times, all tailored to the age of your child. You'll also have the chance to meet and get to know parents and find new playmates for your child. Playgroups are available for children ranging in age from infancy to age five. This program is ongoing and families may join at any time.

Too Hot Too Handle

As middle schoolers enter the teen years, new things occur developmentally, socially and intellectually. Come find out how to manage this new stage with a knowledgeable, positive approach. Topics are adolescent brain development & behaviors, understanding and monitoring technology (myspace, facebook, cell phones, and more!), identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships, and bullying and violence.

The 10 Greatest Gifts I Give My Children

Based on the best-selling book by Steven W. Vannoy-a former workaholic who lost his wife and business before recognizing the importance of family-"The 10 Greatest Gifts I Give My Children" describes 10 'gifts' all parents can give their children. These gifts are free and available to everyone; they demand only a change in attitude, style and focus. They can be developed through practicing five powerful tools, which participants will learn while sharing their observations, successes and failures with one another. Laughter is encouraged; grater wisdom is guaranteed. This is a 6 week class offered once a week. It can also be offered to large groups in one day.

WWF – Winning Without Fighting

Using the RETHINK method by Research Press, parents will learn to analyze their own responses to anger and how it impacts the family environment. Strategies for implementing positive responses to anger with children of different ages will be discussed. WWF – Winning Without Fighting class for children Kindergarten to Middle School will be provided. This class is not appropriate for families referred through court or social service agencies.
