Cox Cable TV FranchiseThe City of Hampton, Virginia renewed its non-exclusive cable television Franchise Agreement with Time Warner Cable in May 1995. The Franchise was transferred to Cox Communications, Inc. in 1997. The cable system serves approximately 50,000 households in Hampton. The Cox cable system now provides the citizens of Hampton with one of the most advanced digital cable systems in the US. With universal access to high-speed Internet service through the cable system, citizens in Hampton are among the 10% of the US population with access to this advanced technology. The 15 year Franchise Agreement between the City of Hampton and Cox Communications, Inc., provides for:
Coordination of the City's Cable Franchise is provided by the Information Technology Department. Other departments included in Franchise administration include the City Attorney's Office and the City Manager's Office.
Federal Communications Commission regulations limit the City's ability to regulate cable franchises. Areas in which the City has regulatory power are generally limited to the Basic programming tier and customer service issues.
