Network
The City has installed a 100 MB switched Ethernet network which provides network connectively to buildings within the City Hall campus. 100 MB switched Ethernet is the standard for desktop connectivity. A wireless network connects several off-site locations to City Hall. The wireless LAN has allowed the city to reduce monthly recurring charges typically associated with standard T1-type network connections. Engineers are able to manage the network through a central software management tool.
The City has identified a standard desktop configuration to ease network configuration complexities and reduce time required for installation. DHCP has also been implemented to further reduce the time required for desktop installations and general IP management.
The City maintains a firewall between the Internet and the internal Wide Area Network.
The City has installed dual, load-balanced T1 speed connections to the Internet for redundancy.
The City operates an external web server for the City's primary web presence (www.hampton.gov) and an internal web server for access by city employees only. The platform is Microsoft's IIS. The City also provides DNS services through a contracted service provider.
The City's Microsoft Exchange Server provides enterprise-wide internal e-mail and Internet e-mail services to city employees.
Virus Scanning Software has been installed on City servers. This software is updated automatically to provide a high level of protection for our information systems from the threat of virus attacks. The application is "pushed out" to PCs for processing on a regular basis.
A sophisticated SPAM filter allows employees to manage their SPAM email. They can view potential SPAM email, save it, or delete it.
