LIVE SCAN is a computerized system that captures the electronic image of finger prints at the time a suspect is processed in lockup. The computerized system provides a method to automatically compare the captured fingerprint images with those maintained in State fingerprint data bases. The result of the LIVE SCAN system will be to accurately identify those arrested while the subject is still in custody.

LIVE SCAN equipment was funded by the state. Hampton costs included site preparation, installation and maintenance of the equipment. LIVE SCAN automates the fingerprinting process by automatically transmitting the electronic fingerprints to the state police, comparing the fingerprints against those in state data bases, and returning results to the locality. Hampton is the fourth jurisdiction in the state to go online with this system, and Hampton and Newport News are the only jurisdictions in Hampton Roads that have implemented the Live Scan system.
