"The Urgency of Now: Changing the Narrative for Black Males from Failure to Hope"

Evening Event

This public event provided an opportunity to raise awareness about resources available for youth and young adults in the community, recruit committed volunteers, and allow concerned citizens the opportunity to directly connect with organizations that support positive outcomes for youth. Event included panelists and presenters who will share information with the Hampton Roads community on national initiatives that address youth violence and the achievement of black males. This event is an intentional opportunity to raise awareness about resources available for youth and young adults in the community, recruit committed volunteers, and allow concerned citizens the opportunity to directly connect with organizations that support positive outcomes for youth.

Daytime Event

The “Urgency of Now” Convening will provide technical assistance and capacity-building strategies for planning, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive violence prevention and reduction strategies. Because addressing black male achievement is important to the entire Hampton Roads region, participating localities will be sending a delegation of 10 to this symposium.  Each locality is forming their own delegation that will be comprised of staff, citizens and volunteers who represent Human Services, Public Safety, Employment, Education, Community Organizing, Faith Community, Youth, Elected Officials,  and City Management. Teams will engage in peer-to-peer learning, which is focused on addressing the reduction of trauma, increasing youth engagement, enhancing data collection strategies, promoting re-entry support, and reducing court involvement.
