Accreditations

Accreditation is an important word in the Hampton Sheriffs Office. It is a system of verification in which correctional facilities comply with standards through a series of reviews, evaluations, surveys and audits. The state of Virginia has mandated that all local jails meet minimum standards set forth by the Department of Corrections for the health and safety of inmates. The Department of Corrections has 117 standards, 34 of which concern life, health and safety issues. For the past three years, the Hampton Sheriffs Office has received a 100 percent compliance rating from the Department of Corrections.

ACA Accreditation
Sheriff Roberts not only endeavored to meet state standards, but also asked his staff to exceed them by achieving accreditation by the American Correctional Associations Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. The American Correctional Association, in existence for over 125 years, established an accreditation process to further improve the professionalism in the field of corrections.
The Hampton Sheriffs Office has attained a 100 percent rating on 38 mandatory ACA standards and a compliance rating of 97.9% on ACAs system of 439 total standards during a three-day audit in June of 2000.

NCCHC Accreditation
In June 2001, Hampton Sheriffs Office achieved accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). The mission of NCCHC is to improve the quality and health care provided in jails and juvenile confinement facilities. The commission develops and maintains the nationally recognized standards for correctional health care. These standards are used to accredit jails, prisons and juvenile confinement facilities and to assist public and private agencies in monitoring the quality of medical services provided in these settings. The Hampton Sheriffs Office has attained a 100 percent rating on 33 Essential Standards and a compliance rating of 97 percent on Important Jail Standards.
