Numerous city and community organizations have documented and supported the need for a facility that addresses the unique needs of the teenage population during out-of-school hours. Hampton’s creation of a teen center is a dream ten years in the making. Focus groups, surveys, and public meetings have all generated ideas for such a teen-friendly space.
The Youth Commission and thousands of other youth have helped with:
site location, the approval of the site
selection of the design & architectural firms
identifying services, supports, and opportunities that will be offered at the site
coordination with the adults & organizations needed to ensure success
security plans
ensuring that diversity is honored
governance policy & procedures
budget development
establishing criteria for measuring success, both operationally and fiscally
fund raising strategies
determining the type of climate they want
