Numerous city and community organizations have documented and supported the need for a facility that addresses the unique needs of the teenage population during out-of-school hours. Hampton’s creation of a teen center is a dream ten years in the making. Focus groups, surveys, and public meetings have all generated ideas for such a teen-friendly space.

The Youth Commission and thousands of other youth have helped with:

• site location, the approval of the site

• selection of the design & architectural firms

• identifying services, supports, and opportunities that will be offered at the site

• coordination with the adults & organizations needed to ensure success

• security plans

• ensuring that diversity is honored

• governance policy & procedures

• budget development

• establishing criteria for measuring success, both operationally and fiscally

• fund raising strategies

• determining the type of climate they want
