The Peninsula Stadium Authority was created in 1962 by the joint authority of the city councils of Hampton and Newport News. The purpose of the Authority was to maintain and operate Peninsula War Memorial Stadium.
In June of 2007, the city of Newport News withdrew from the Authority, making Hampton the sole municipal member. The Authority is governed by a board of directors, the members of which are appointed by Hampton City Council for terms of no more than four years.
Purpose of the Board
The purpose of the board as stated is to maintain and operate Peninsula War Memorial Stadium, but its board members also believe that the facility is a community asset, contributing favorably to the quality of life on the Peninsula in general and in the City of Hampton specifically.
In addition to being the home field for the Peninsula Pilots, a wooden-bat summer league for collegiate baseball players, it is also home to the Newport News Apprentice School baseball team. The stadium is also used by various community groups for gatherings, meetings and events.
