The services provided by the Commonwealth's Attorney are mandated by State statute. These services include, but are not limited to:
Prosecution of all felonies and selected serious misdemeanors which occur in Hampton, e. g.., shoplifting to driving while intoxicated to capital murder.
Prosecution of all matters at the discretion of the ten judges serving Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts, and cases at the special request of the City Attorney or Police Department.
Civil matters, such as the declaration of habitual offenders, forfeiture of property involved in drug offenses and other serious crimes, injunctions for common nuisances, and appeals from commitment hearings.
Advisory opinions on conflict of interest laws, related prosecutions, and enforcement of election laws.
Prosecution of all domestic violence misdemeanors and felonies.
Legal advice to the Police Department nd Magistrates.
Application for wiretaps and other intercepted communications
Extradition of criminals
Recommendations for special officer appointments.
Expungement of certain criminal records.
Supervision of the regional drug prosecution effort.
Administration of the collection of court fines and costs.
