The mission of Friends of Sandy Bottom is to serve as a vesicle through which the participating members will maintain and preserve Sandy Bottom Nature Park and other parks in the City of Hampton, Virginia.
The Friends of Sandy Bottom (FOSB) started after becoming part of a coalition formed by concerned citizens and the Hampton City Council when the park was just beginning to be discussed. We saw Hampton’s last chance for a Nature Park. Volunteers assembled to become “The Friends of Sandy Bottom Nature Park”. They recruited the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club to help with maintenance. They first marked out “Wood Duck Trail”. Then they blazed many different trails plus built benches, cage for wildlife, the Wedding Gazebo and other facilities.
FOSB sponsor an annual Easter event and the Naturedoption program for the non-releasable wildlife that are cared for at the park every day. With proceeds, they have purchased playground equipment, an ice machine, a large tent, an all purpose vehicle and many more necessities to help support the staff and events in the park.
The FOSB welcomes all to the group and consider those who volunteer at the park part of our group. The FOSB believes in “the park” and also strongly supports the park’s staff. Together, they provide a Nature Park of the highest quality for the citizens of Hampton and the entire region.
