In an effort to positively impact the learning abilities of young students, the Hampton Sheriff’s Office participates in a Lunch Buddy Reading Program. This program gives deputies and civilian staff members the opportunity to visit Hampton elementary schools weekly to mentor and tutor students in reading. While this program is designed for one-on-one tutoring between deputy and student, the “cafeteria visit” portion allows for interaction between deputy and a full class of elementary school students. It gives deputies the opportunity to discuss the particulars of his or her job, the importance of respecting authority figures, and the importance of doing what’s right. It also gives the kids the opportunity to experience firsthand that there is more to a law enforcement person than the uniform. This visit allows the kids to put a human face with the uniform.
