Officers on the Crisis Intervention Team are specially trained to recognize and de-escalate crises involving people with acute episodes of mental illness. The goal of the crisis team program is to reduce unnecessary restraint and incarceration of people with mental illness, and to provide them with appropriate treatment in the community.
Cooperation & Partnership
The crisis team in Hampton and Newport News is an established and effective partnership between law enforcement, the community, hospitals, jails, mental health services and the courts. This cooperation has resulted in formal, comprehensive training for law enforcement on the signs and symptoms of mental illness and helping those in distress.
