Help decide new location for Langley Air Force Base entrance

Thursday, September 24, 2020

The City of Hampton and Joint Base Langley Eustis will host a day and a half online Planning Charrette, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. At the design meeting, project team members will be available to discuss options for relocating the North Armistead Avenue West Gate “entry control facility” off Sweeney Boulevard and out of the clear zone -- the runway's flight approach zone. The JBLE-Langley, ECF, Alternatives Analysis project team has been evaluating two site locations along with the development of a variety of alternative layouts. The final five courses of action, narrowed down by the project team, will be considered during the 1.5-day Planning Charrette. The objective of the Planning Charrette is to refine the conceptual designs of the proposed plans with the intent of selecting a preferred plan to be further evaluated.

The primary goal of the JBLE-Langley ECF Alternatives Analysis project is the development and selection a preferred course of action that provides the level of resiliency necessary to mitigate the potential impact of significant rainfall or flooding events, accommodates the anticipated growth in JBLE-Langley traffic, addresses public safety concerns by removing traffic and entry out of the base's clear zone, and supports the overarching mission at JBLE-Langley.

Once a plan is selected, JBLE-Langley can move forward with programming and pursuing funding for the new entrance.
