Sigma Series — Beyond Pluto: The Hunt for Planet X

Tuesday, January 11, 2022

The Virginia Air & Space Science Center and NASA Langley Research Center will provide space enthusiasts with a virtual event on Tuesday, Jan. 11, that explores Pluto, the Kuiper Belt and some of the farthest reaches of our solar system. "Beyond Pluto: The Hunt for Planet X," presented by Scott Sheppard, is part of the Sigma Lecture Series. It will start at 7:30 p.m., and the livestream will be your only opportunity to see the lecture. It will not be recorded and posted after the fact. Sheppard is an astronomer for the Earth and Planets Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C.

The Kuiper Belt, which has Pluto as the largest member, is a region of comet-like objects just beyond Neptune. This belt of objects has an outer edge, which we are only now able to explore beyond in detail with new modern cameras and large telescopes. The grouping of some objects beyond the Kuiper Belt suggests an as-yet-unobserved planet more massive than the Earth is influencing the objects' orbit.

Scott S. Sheppard is an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. He studies the role of small bodies in our solar system. He has personally discovered more than 100 moons around Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
