Dec. 4, 2014 - Hundreds of Hampton University students and others marched from the University to Hampton City Hall Thursday afternoon in a peaceful protests of recent grand jury decisions in Illinois and New York City.

Chanting "Black Lives Matter" and carrying protest signs, the students had a police escort.

Assistant City Manager Pete Peterson said: "In case you are wondering what is going on outside of the building, there is a peaceful demonstration being held by HU students. The march is from the HU Shopping Center to City Hall parking Lot. The activity will culminate with a “lay-in” in the City Hall parking lot. The activity is expected to be over by 4:30 p.m."

Earlier this week, a grand jury in New York City decided not to charge police in the choking death of a black man. Last month, a grand jury decided not to charge police in the death of a black teenager.
