[ARCHIVED] Change your batteries this weekend when you reset your clocks

The Hampton Fire Division reminds residents to change the batteries in all of their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they reset their clocks early Sunday. Some related tips:

*Smoke alarms save lives. You should have a working smoke alarm on every floor in your home and in every bedroom.

*Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years because the sensors in alarms can degrade over time.

*37% of home fire deaths results from homes not having a smoke alarm or having an alarm that doesn't work.

*Plan regular fire drills to practice your escape plans, and make sure everyone in your home knows what to do when a smoke alarm sounds.

*Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do in an emergency.

Hampton residents can schedule free home safety surveys and smoke alarm installations by calling 757-325-4945.
