July 2, 2015 - While fireworks are a traditional part of Independence Day celebrations, the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue reminds us that public displays are the safest way to enjoy the fireworks. Only public fireworks displays are legal in the city.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2011 an estimated 17,800 reported fires were started by fireworks. These fires resulted in an estimated 40 civilian injuries and $32 million in direct property damage.

Too often, Fire officials say, consumers do not recognize the inherent dangers of fireworks and treat them as toys. Even sparklers (which look harmless) cause hundreds of injuries every year. By avoiding illegal and dangerous fireworks and using legal fireworks responsibly, you can help ensure a fun and safer experience for everyone.

Any fireworks that explode, emit a flame or spark higher than 12 feet, or perform as a projectile is specifically prohibited under the City of Hampton Fire Prevention Code. Any person possessing them can be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of a $2,500 fine and/or one year in jail.

The Division and the city recommend that you enjoy your holiday weekend and leave the fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks may be seen at the Peninsula Pilots and Langley Speedway on Friday, July 3rd. Fort Monroe has a fireworks display on Saturday, July 4th.
