[ARCHIVED] Health Department confirms 2 cases of rabies this month

Sept. 18, 2015 - The Hampton Health Department has two confirmed cases of rabies so far this month. Both were raccoons killed by family dogs. One was in Easthill Estates in the Buckroe area and the other was in the Butler Farm area.

Gary Hagy, environmental health manager with the Health Department, urges all residents to make sure their pets have current rabies shots. He also advises residents to avoid feeding wild animals or leaving food outside for their pets that may attract wild animals. Finally, all contact with wild or stray animals should be avoided.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately wash the wound thoroughly and contact your physician or the Health Department for further advice.

If you see a sickly animal, particularly a raccoon, you should call the Hampton Animal Control at 727-6111. Need more information? Call the Health Department at 727-2570.
