April 14, 2017 – The Planning Commission will consider the city’s five-year capital spending plan when it meets April 20. The Commission has moved its meeting time to the third Thursday of the month instead of the first.

The proposed capital plan is what the city has been looking as the maintenance-level spending. It includes projects in all Council strategic areas -- Educated and Engaged Citizenry; Living with Water; Good Government; Safe and Clean Community; Economic Growth; Place Making; and Family Resilience and Economic Empowerment. Cost estimates for the recommended projects in the maintenance five-year plan total $210,452,102. Council is considering an expanded spending plan, but has not yet settled on funding levels or project priorities.

The commission will also hear recommendations for an update to the Downtown Master Plan. The update primarily looks at the waterfront, Bright’s Creek and Harbor Square areas, although there are other updates as well.

Other public hearing items include:

  • A rezoning application by Marlyn Development Corp. and AH&H Corp. to rezone about 16 acres at 1300 N Mallory Street, former Shelton Home site to single-family zoning. The Planning Commission recommended denial to a previous proposal with higher density, and when the applicant offered changes to City Council, Council sent the matter back to the Planning Commission to take a look at revisions.
  • A use permit for 3,600 square feet of vehicle storage at 56 Tidewater Drive.
  • A use permit for an extended-stay hotel at a portion of the site of the former Macy’s department store in Peninsula Town Center. Both Planning and City Council approved a permit for a hotel on that site, but as the current design calls for rooms with mini-kitchens, a different permit is required.

The meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in City Hall, City Council Chambers, 8th Floor, and is broadcast live on Hampton TV, Cox 47 and Fios 22.
