June 1, 2017 - If mosquitoes are a problem in your neighborhood, don’t forget that you can call 3-1-1 to ask that your neighborhood gets a visit from truck-mounted spray equipment. Public Works decides which neighborhoods are visited - after dusk - based on 3-1-1 calls and neighborhood mosquito counts, or surveys. Monday evening, the city plans to spray for mosquitoes in the Elizabeth Lakes, Colonial Acres, Fox Bridge and Grimes Road areas.
As we head into the heat of summer and with above average rainfall residents are encouraged to dump any standing water around the house to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. This includes checking flower pots, children’s toys and old tires. Residents are also encouraged to dress appropriately, wearing long sleeve shirts, pants and socks. Finally, Public Works suggests using a repellant with DEET or another effective mosquito-fighting ingredient. Go online for more information. To report a problem in your neighborhood, call 3-1-1 or 757-727-831 from a cell phone or from outside the city.
