[ARCHIVED] Hundreds attend grand opening Thursday of first Lidl store on the peninsula

June 15, 2017 - The line of shoppers snaked down the side of the building and into the parking lot early Thursday as hundreds of people came out for the grand opening of the first Lidl grocery on the Peninsula. Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck welcome the German-based retailer to the city and said that Lidl provides yet another shopping option for Hampton residents. The mayor also noted that Lidl has a 50,000 square-foot training center in Hampton. 

Vice-Mayor Linda Curtis; City Manager Mary Bunting; Leonard Sledge, director of Hampton’s Economic Development office; and former Mayor George Wallace, a member of the city’s Economic Development Authority, also were at the ribbon-cutting.  The Hampton Lidl (pronounced Leed-l) store is located at 2000 Mercury Boulevard. The store in Virginia Beach also had a grand opening Thursday morning.
