July 13, 2017 - Hampton's newest grocery, Aldi, had a grand opening Thursday, with dozens of anxious shoppers lined up outside before doors opened about 7:45 a.m. Aldi is located at 1980 Saville Row.

A number of city officials, including the mayor, city manager, city council members and economic development director, had a short tour of the store beforehand. Alex Makel, Aldi's district manager, highlighted the new look, new hours and fresh produce that the store brings to Hampton. Makel also noted that the new stores are nothing like the stores of years ago, with improved displays and presentations.

Mayor Donnie Tuck welcomed Aldi to the city and noted the products and economic value that the company brings to the city. Earlier this summer, Lidl, another European grocery, opened its first store in Hampton.

Founded in Germany in 1961, Aldi is now headquartered in Batavia, Ill., and has more than 1,600 stores in 35 states. Over the past decade, the company has nearly doubled in size. By 2018, Aldi expects to have nearly 2,000 stores in the U.S.
