Aug.31, 2017 - Hampton's Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Department Thursday unveiled a new "Waterwheels" floating wheelchair that will be available and free to use by visitors to  Buckroe Beach through Labor Day weekend. The manufacturer says it "allows wheelchair users the wonderful opportunity to be rolled and floated right out into the water!" Kevin Myers, director of Parks, said that next year the city plans to have four floating wheelchairs (two at each end of the beach) that can be used or reserved by visitors.

The chair, which cost just over $1,766.00, is part of a continuing campaign by City Council to make Buckroe Beach more attractive and more accessible to all visitors. Kayaks, jet skis and paddleboats were available for rent this summer, accompanied by a concession stand selling hot dogs, drinks, snack food and apparel. A food vendor lot was also added, along with complimentary shuttle service. There are three shelters at Buckroe, a children's playground, and restroom facilities May 15-Sept. 15 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Dogs are not allowed in the park from May 15-Sept. 15, and park rangers are on-site all year. For more information on the floating wheelchair, contact the Parks department at 757-727-6348.
