[ARCHIVED] Hampton gets $2.5 million in grants for flood mitigation, raising houses

Sept. 14, 2017 - The City of Hampton has been awarded nearly half of $5.4 million in federal grant money that will be used to elevate or demolish residential properties in flood-prone areas of Virginia.

The flooding mitigation grants are from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. In Virginia, the grant program is administered by the Department of Emergency Management, which announced Thursday that Hampton will get $2,516,700 for the elevation of seven flood-prone properties that have already been chosen for assistance. The return investment is expected to be more than $3.6 million. Chesapeake will get $1.19 million for the acquisition and demolition of five properties, Norfolk will get $1.28 million for the elevation of six properties, and the Northern Neck Planning District Commission (Northumberland and Richmond counties) will get $407,325 for the elevation of two flood-prone properties.

Jeff Stern, Virginia's coordinator of Emergency Management, said "we partner with each locality to protect lives and property through these grants, and can drastically reduce local response and recovery needs after flooding events."
