Jan. 10, 2018 -  Dois I. Rosser Jr.  founder and chairman emeritus of International Cooperating Ministries and former chairman of the POMOCO Auto Group, was awarded the city’s Distinguished Citizen Medal Wednesday night for his extraordinary service to Hampton.

Established in 1964, the medal is Hampton’s version of a key to the city, and has been given fewer than 30 times.

Rosser is a longtime businessman in Hampton Roads who has also devoted much of his time, energy and finances to ICM, a Hampton-based charity that has helped build some 7,000 churches in 86 countries, including Russia, India, China and Vietnam.

A resolution approved by City Council Wednesday listed just some of Rosser’s many accomplishments and honors over the years, including:

  • POMOCO’s support of various area organizations, including the Hampton Arts Foundation, Peninsula Food Bank, and Virginia Air & Space Center.
  • Rosser’s service on numerous boards, including the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization; the boards of trustees at Hampton University and the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula.
  • Rosser’s receipt of the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in the year 2000.

Rosser and his wife, Shirley, currently live in Hampton.

For a list of others who have been awarded the Distinguished Citizen Medal, including former NASA mathematician Katherine G. Johnson of “Hidden Figures” fame and former Mayor George Wallace, go to http://hampton.gov/DocumentCenter/View/7488.
