[ARCHIVED] Unwanted residential propane tanks, smaller cannister can be left at collection site

March 1, 2018 - Hampton residents who need to properly dispose of residential propane tanks, including five pound cylinders, one pound camping tanks and smaller, soldering-type cylinders, can now leave them at regular chemical collection events. (See dates below)

Residents are reminded that they should never place these tanks in regular trash or recycling containers because they could explode during compaction inside trucks or during processing at Hampton's steam plant. Instead, the tanks can be taken to special collection events for chemicals, computers and other materials.

This year the collections will be held in the Hampton Coliseum parking lot on Coliseum Drive from 8 a.m.-noon on July 21, Sept. 15 and Nov. 17.  Acceptable materials include the propane tanks, oil and latex paint, solvents, insecticides, oven cleaners, charcoal fluids, swimming pool chemicals and more. Go online for more information and a complete list of what can be collected or recycled. The events are sponsored by the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority.
