May 17, 2018 - Commemorating the 300th anniversary the death of the notorious pirate Blackbeard  - and the 19th Annual Blackbeard Festival here in Hampton - the exhibit Pirates, Privateers and Buccaneers is now open at the Hampton History Museum. It  tells the story of Blackbeard, who blockaded Charleston Harbor in 1718 prior to his death in North Carolina, and many other pirates.

The exhibit is on loan from the South Carolina State Museum and will be in Hampton through Sept. 2.  It will thrill those who have always been fascinated by these desperadoes of the sea, and dispel a number of popular myths.

Blackbeard was killed in 1718 by members of the Royal Navy who were sent to the Outer Banks by Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood. Oral history says the pirate's head was later hung from a pole at the mouth of the Hampton River as a warning to others.
