[ARCHIVED] Widespread power outages leave some areas without power after Michael

Storm Updates

Oct. 12, 2018 - Much of Hampton remains without power today after the remnants of Hurricane Michael brought overnight wind gusts of up to 62 mph across the city.

City offices are generally open, including City Hall and the Ruppert Sargent building. However, the following facilities will be closed until power is restored:

Phoebus and Willow Oaks library branches; North Phoebus and Fort Monroe community centers, the Neighborhood Network Center, and Little England Cultural Center. Air Power Park and Woodlands golf course have no power but are open, because most activities are outdoors.

Almost 40 percent of the city is without power, with the biggest pockets around: Most of Wythe through Shell Road, Merrimac Shores, Hampton University, Fort Monroe, Phoebus, Woodland Road, Fox Hill Road, Willow Oaks, Little Back River Road, King Street north of Mercury, LaSalle Avenue, especially north of I-64, and Northampton around Kraft Elementary.

Emergency call volumes were high overnight. Police responded to 182 calls, and fire and rescue responded to 180 calls. There are at least eight homes in the city that are not habitable due to fallen trees.

Damage assessment crews are out estimating damage totals. Residents who have property damage are asked to call 311 (727-8311) and report damage.

Residents are reminded to stay clear of power lines. Don't get near downed lines, and don't touch trees that are on power lines. Dominion Energy has additional crews on duty today. However, with 25,000 power outages in Hampton alone, restoration could take awhile. In Hampton Roads, 200,000 people are without power.
