[ARCHIVED] Hampton named a top digital city for 17th year


Nov. 2, 2018 – For the 17th time, Hampton has been named one of the nation’s top cities when it comes to using technology to improve citizen services, enhance transparency and encourage citizen engagement.

The Center for Digital Government judges cities throughout the country on 10 key characteristics, including being mobile, engaged, connected, efficient and innovative. 

Hampton’s advances for 2018 included:

  • Open data reports by police, codes and community development
  • Growth in social media followers and video views
  • Apps for 311, police, sheriff, city
  • Cloud storage for sharing information with partner entities
  • Broadband connectivity with neighboring Newport News
  • Real-time crime center monitoring of traffic and private business cameras
  • Updates of security policies
  • Rolling out wi-fi in more public locations

Hampton has been ranked in the Top Ten more than any other Virginia city with a population of at least 125,000. 

In a news release announcing winners of the Digital Cities Survey, Teri Takai, executive director of the Center for Digital Government, said: “This year’s leading digital cities are leveraging technology to connect disadvantaged citizens with critical information and services, promote citizen inclusion in important government processes and share government data with the public. Thanks to the efforts of these innovative cities, citizens can now meaningfully interact with city government more easily than in any other time in history. Congratulations to the winners!”
