[ARCHIVED] Hampton schools first to fully take part in state's 2019 Commemoration program

Feb. 26, 2019 - Hampton City Schools is the first district in the state to have 100 percent participation in Virginia's 2019 Commemoration Schools Program. The state program is meant to honor the legacy of 1619 – when the first enslaved Africans arrived in the new colony of Virginia near present-day Fort Monroe – and build awareness of Virginia's role in the creation of the United States. The theme for the program is democracy, diversity, and opportunity. Go online to read the Hampton City Schools news release. The 1619 arrival is being commemorated nationally, statewide and locally. All 32 Hampton schools are participating in the state program, and 112 of 132 state schools districts are taking part in the year-long effort. An exhibit at the Hampton History Museum highlights the events of 1619, and there is a document online detailing the arrival and events leading up to it.
