[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Eastbound Armistead Avenue open but westbound lanes will close, VDOT announces

April 23, 2019 - Eastbound Armistead Avenue under the I-64 overpass is again open to traffic, but VDOT will close westbound Armistead between YMCA Way and near Thomas Street beginning April 24.

This is the next phase of emergency repairs to the I-64 bridge over Armistead.

The detour will begin downtown, where westbound/northbound drivers will be advised to turn left on Pembroke Avenue, right on LaSalle Avenue, and left again onto Armistead Avenue.

The closing is expected to last about six weeks. The remainder of the repairs are expected to be completed by Memorial Day, weather permitting, said VDOT. The Armistead Avenue entrance ramp to I-64 east will open after all repairs and resurfacing are complete.

EARLIER:

Feb. 8, 2019 - The Virginia Department of Transportation will make emergency repairs to a portion of the eastbound Interstate 64 bridge over Armistead Avenue near LaSalle Avenue. Closures could begin Feb. 27.

The major impacts to traffic are:

  • Starting as early as Feb. 27: The on-ramp from northbound LaSalle Avenue to I-64 east and the auxiliary (merge) lane on I-64 east will be closed for the duration of the project, which is estimated to be complete in late May (weather permitting).
  • Starting as early as March 4: The eastbound lanes on Armistead Avenue near the bridge (between LaSalle Ave and YMCA Way) will be closed for up to 6 weeks. Once the eastbound lanes have reopened, the westbound lanes on Armistead Avenue (between YMCA Way and the I-64 off-ramp before Thomas Street) will be closed for up to 6 weeks. Signed detours using Pembroke Avenue and Lasalle Avenue will be in place.

The detour for eastbound 64 is: traffic will continue north on LaSalle, turn left on Mercury Boulevard West ramp, turn left on North Armistead Avenue and right onto LaSalle Avenue West and enter the ramp to I-64 East on the right.
