[ARCHIVED] Cities United summer meeting theme focuses on arrival of first Africans in 1619

May 30, 2019 - Cities United, the national organization of mayors and others dedicated to reducing violence among young black men and boys, has chosen “The Journey Continues” as the theme for its 6^th Annual Convening Aug. 21-23 in Hampton. The theme commemorates the arrival 400 years ago of the first enslaved Africans in English North America. They were brought ashore in the summer of 1619 at Point Comfort in Fort Monroe.

The convening, said Cities United, is a chance to reflect, renew and respond, and to “gather and fortify our stakeholders addressing community violence … by providing a safer, welcoming, solution-focused space to network, learn and build.”

A number of special programs and activities have been scheduled in Hampton this summer to commemorate the 1619 arrival, including the dedication of a visitors center at Fort Monroe, black heritage tours, an “African Landing Day” program and a commemoration concert at Fort Monroe.
