[ARCHIVED] Free Juneteenth Jazz Concert on June 22 commemorates 1865 announcement about slavery

June 13, 2019 - Project 1619 Inc. and the National Park Service will celebrate Juneteenth with a free concert at the Fort Monroe Base Theater on Saturday, June 22 at 7 p.m. Featured performers include saxophonist Todd Ledbetter, bassist Herman Burney, trumpeter Paul Bailey, and pianist Noble Jolley Jr. (pictured).

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date when the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas, freeing some 250,000 enslaved men, women and children who lived in the lone star state. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered on April 9 and The Army of the Trans-Mississippi did not surrender until June 2.

Project 1619 is a grassroots organization that commemorates the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in English-speaking North America. The ship carrying those men and women arrived at Point Comfort on modern-day Fort Monroe on Aug. 25, 1619.
