[ARCHIVED] Volunteers sought to join in reading of the names on Sept. 11 at Gosnold's Hope Park in Hampton

Aug. 20, 2019 - Volunteers are encouraged to join in the "Reading of the Names” beginning at 8:30 AM, Wednesday, September 11th at Gosnold’s Hope Park, 901 E. Little Back River Road in Hampton. Local citizens will gather to read aloud the names of all those who were lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the names of fallen heroes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This event continues a tradition that dates back to more formal “Days of Remembrance and Hope” ceremonies held from December 11, 2001 to September 11, 2014, and more intimate events in recent years. Reading the names is simple, yet somber. Each volunteer will pick up a sheet or sheets of paper with the names of the fallen and read them aloud. Names are not duplicated on multiple sheets. So, each reader has a solemn duty to read the names they have been provided.

No amplification is provided and readers will read names simultaneously. As a result, as those names are read, they might be heard only by the reader or a passerby. Having the names read on 9-11 means a great deal to those who have lost friends or loved ones. It also continues a proud American tradition of cherishing acts of service and sacrifice. With roughly 10,000 names to read, we need your support.
