Nov. 8, 2019 - A movable mini park has been installed on Mellen Street in Phoebus to provide a place for recreation and relaxation. The mini park or “parklet” is currently outside Sly Clyde Ciderworks, but it could move soon.

Decorated with hay bales, and orange and yellow furniture and umbrellas for fall, the space is designed to give pedestrians a little bit more room to visit with friends, take a rest, have a cupcake, or wait for a table at their favorite restaurant. This fall version will appear — somewhere in the city — until mid-December. Look for a spring version in 2020.

Also, two colorful crosswalks were installed: at Lincoln and Eaton streets and County and Curry streets. Safety “bump-outs” give pedestrians a little extra room at the corners and further separate pedestrians from automobiles. They create a safe space for pedestrians to walk out to view on-coming traffic and to be seen by on-coming traffic. Each is themed: near City Hall, it echos the city’s “From the Sea to the Stars” motto; outside the Phoebus Little League field, it incorporates a baseball motif.

Both areas are in the city’s Arts District, and the painted spaces provide an extra level of fun (as well as visibility). Both projects are part of the city’s placemaking strategic priorities and help to create public spaces, activate existing spaces and make neighborhoods vibrant.
