[ARCHIVED] Peninsula city, county leaders urge residents to limit gatherings of more than 50 people

news

March 14, 2020 - The city managers and county administrators from the Peninsula issued a joint release today, asking residents to avoid gatherings of more than 50 people, including "church services, civic/social organization meetings, and public events and festivities."

The joint statement was released shortly after the region learned of the first death due to the coronavirus. The Virginia Health Department is checking into all eight of the region’s cases, tracking links to travel or known cases. In one case, they have not found a linkage, suggesting that there is some general spread in the community.

"Additional steps may be required in the coming hours and days as local officials try to slow the rate of infection thus allowing the local health system the capability to treat those who most need medical care," read the statement, which was sent from:

James City County Administrator Scott Stevens, Williamsburg City Manager Andrew Trivette, York County Administrator Neil Morgan, Newport News City Manager Cindy Rohlf, Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting and Poquoson City Manager Randy Wheeler.
