[ARCHIVED] Taxpayers suffering losses from COVID crisis may qualify for extension on home and car taxes


April 8, 2020 - Residents and businesses who suffered financial losses due to the COVID crisis can apply for an extension of the June 5 tax deadline, Hampton City Council unanimously agreed.

Those who apply and are accepted will have until Aug. 1, 2020, to pay their personal property, real estate, and business personal property with no interest or penalty fees. Applicants must show they have a demonstrated financial loss or strain directly attributable to COVID-19 and not covered by unemployment and other stimulus programs. 

Applications must be submitted to the Treasurer’s office by Friday, May 15, 2020. The Treasurer’s Office will notify taxpayers if their application is accepted. 

To apply, go to You can apply online or download a printable form Forms must be mailed (postmarked by May 15) or delivered to the Treasurer’s Office drop box at the Ruppert Sargent Building, 1 Franklin Street. Printed applications will also be available in boxes attached to the doors of that building.

For those who don’t meet the criteria, personal property (or car) and real estate taxes are due June 5, 2020. With the city offices closed to reduce the spread of the virus, there are additional ways to pay.

  • To drop off payments, there is a green box outside the Ruppert Sargent building at the corner of Franklin Street and Queens Way. Payments submitted in the drop box must be in the form of a check or money order, not cash. 
  • To mail payments, send to Hampton Treasurer, PO Box 638, Hampton, VA 23669. Payments mailed also must be in the form of a check or money order, not cash.
  • To pay taxes online, go to (online transaction fee waived during the office closure).
  •  To pay by phone with a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover) call 877-277-6341. The phone system will require the customer to have an account number for personal property and an RPC number for real estate.  If a customer needs an account number or their RPC number, they can call 757-727-6374. Account numbers will be on the tax bills, which will be mailed soon.

Council also approved a loan program for businesses. The Small Business Disaster Loan Program will be administered through the city’s Economic Development Authority.  It is designed to provide financial assistance with the adverse economic impact resulting from the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

The program can provide loans up to $10,000 to help businesses with payroll expenses, rent or mortgage payments, utility expenses, marketing and other eligible business expenses incurred during normal operations.
