Household Chemicals Collection and Electronics Recycling
Household chemicals and electronic devises should not go into the regular garbage. They may contain chemicals and metals that shouldn’t go into the steam plant or landfill. So the City of Hampton Public Works sponsors a regional household chemical and electronics collection five times a year in Hampton. The collections are held at the Hampton Coliseum parking lot, 8am – Noon. The remaining dates are July 18, September 19, and November 21. The regional public service authority, Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA), operates the collection. Hampton residents may take materials to collections in other VPPSA communities. See the list at the end of this message.
Here are some safety rules for bringing materials to the collection:
- Do not smoke while dropping off chemicals and electronics
- Don’t leave the materials in your vehicle for a long time in high heat
- Keep the products in their original containers, if possible, and make sure lids and caps are tight
- Put materials in sturdy boxes so they won’t topple over and roll around in your trunk or storage compartment
- Don’t put multiple containers in bags or soft containers where they might spill and mix. This could result in harmful chemical interactions
- If you have a leaking container, place this item separately in a clear plastic bag, with newspaper or paper towels on the bottom. Secure in an upright position so it doesn’t spill in your vehicle. Please notify staff that the item is leaking.
When you arrive at the collection:
A VPPSA employee will ask which community you live in and what you have brought. You might be asked to provide proof of residency
VPPSA staff will unload the materials from your vehicle – please stay in your vehicle unless you’re asked to get out
Computers and chemicals are dropped off at different collection points at the site
Be ready to tell VPPSA employees what materials you have before they begin unloading
