Hampton is the only midsize Virginia city to be named one of the 100 safest in America. Midsize cities are those with populations between 100,000 and 300,000. Large cities were those above 300,000, and small cities have between 10,000 and 99,999. (Towns or cities below 10,000 were not examined.)

Hampton came in 96th on the list, with an overall "crime score" of 55.3, with the lower the score, the better. California cities dominated the list, taking 38% of the slots. Virginia Beach, with an overall score of 30.9, took the top slot for large cities, with 59 large cities listed as safest. In general, larger cities had higher crime scores per 1,000 people, with 50 of the large safest cities having a higher crime score than Hampton's. In general, larger cities had higher crime scores per 1,000 people, with 50 of the large safest cities having a higher crime score than Hampton's.

Hampton and Virginia Beach were the only two Virginia cities on any of the three lists. More than 3,000 cities were studied.

The study was based on the most recent FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting data, which was released in September and covers crimes committed during 2020. Violent crimes, such as robbery, assault, rape, and murder, carried more weight in the overall score than property crimes, including burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, but all crime was examined.
