March 9, 2023 — Staff members from Hampton Healthy Families visited the State Capitol in Richmond as part of Advocacy Days on Jan. 19 and Feb. 2 at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond. The representatives from Hampton's Healthy Families Department conveyed the importance of the services the City of Hampton provides through Healthy Families.
Amy Friday, Ashely Rossen, and Shevon Spence and 6-8 families participating in the program attended for Home Visiting Advocacy Day on Jan. 19. Holly Potter, Krista Wetzler, and Kaci Smith attended for Child Abuse Prevention Advocacy Day on Feb. 2.
The group from Hampton met various legislators, including Del. A.C. Cordoza, and Sen Mamie Locke's chief of staff.
Healthy Families staff member Amy Friday said, "Advocacy day was a blast!" Her group talked with Del. Cordoza, who said his chief of staff is a part of Healthy Families. Del. Cordoza said there is funding in the budget for the program. He said he was excited to hear our stories both from participants and staff.
Hampton staffer Ashley Rossen described the experience as moving and said the representatives they met were receptive to their viewpoints.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
